Dvorak: Cello Concerto, Michael Center, cello
Beach: Gaelic Symphony

Of all the cello concertos, Dvorak's masterpiece stands as the most celebrated and coveted by cellists around the world. It is a work of massive proportions and extreme technical challenges which never misses to awe and inspire. Amy Beach made history in 1896 when she completed what was the first symphony by an American woman. She based four of its themes on traditional Irish-Gaelic melodies which she found in a collection published in 1841 by a folk-song collector in Dublin. We are thrilled to present this ground-breaking work which inspired generations of women composers!

Mussorgsky: Night on Bold Mountain
Pasatieri: Viola Concerto, Jo Nardolillo, viola. World Premiere
Mendelssohn: Symphony No.4 "Italian"

One of the most fulfilling aspects of performing is to bring a new work to life. Composer Thomas Pasatieri has entrusted LUCO to premiere his new Viola Concerto in the hands of virtuoso Jo Nardolillo. Night on Bald Mountain is a powerfully evocative work from the mind of a completely original musical genius. Mendelssohn was only 20 when he visited Italy for the first time. He was so taken by such vibrant and colorful culture that he composed one of his most dazzling and joyful compositions as a tribute to the Italian way of life.

Stravinsky: Pulcinella, Suite
Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2
Cecile Licad, piano
American Premiere TBA

Pulcinella was the gateway to Stravinsky's second phase as a composer, the neoclassical. He wrote of Pulcinella: “Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. It was a backward look, of course — the first of many love affairs in that direction — but it was a look in the mirror, too."

Called a "pianist's pianist" by The New Yorker, Cecile Licad's artistry is a blend of daring musical instinct and the superb training. Her natural talent was honed at the Curtis Institute of Music by three of the greatest performer/pedagogues of our time: Rudolf Serkin, Seymour Lipkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski.
